Music
Salem’s music ministry supports and encourages the use of our God-given talents -- musical, dramatic and other arts -- in worship and outreach.
Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God.
Psalm 100: 2
We have 3 children's choirs, an adult choir, a praise ensemble and band and two bell choirs. All choirs and ensembles participate in worship services and perform on other occasions.
The Sanctuary Choir (adult choir), under the direction of Minister of Music, Marshall Bowen, leads worship at one of the services nearly every week. In addition, there are two concerts each year at which the choir is featured. Dr. Jay Brunot, our church organist, is the accompanist.
The Schola Cantorum (the children's choirs) are lead by Cheryl Speer, Associate Minister of Music. This well respected "singing school" has two groups who lead worship in concerts throughout the year. Jubilate is for those in grades one through three, while Cantate Domino is for grades four through six.
Tintinnabulum is Salem's handbell choir for ringers in grades seven through high school. It is an outgrowth of our very successful handbell program at Salem School. They ring for services and concerts several times each year.
The Praise Ensemble and Band, ably led by Dave and Sue Siebels, leads worship at the 11:00 a.m. Sunday worship service each week. They use the best of contemporary praise music in support of the weekly worship. The groups consist of volunteer singers and musicians from the Salem community.
Vocal soloists and instrumentalists often serve the congregation by leading worship as cantors or by providing special music for the day. There are also opportunities for performing with the choirs, both during the worship services and in concerts.
Drama has been an important part of Salem's ministry. There are opportunities for chancel dramas in worship, both on Sunday and at special services. Salem has done many musical plays including Music Man and You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown.
Salem Lutheran School has a wonderful music program with regular instruction and performances, concerts and worship. This includes vocal music for all grade levels and handbell instruction in the upper grades.
Salem offers an annual Concert Series and a Summer Coffee House Series. These are presented as community outreach and feature fine performances from Salem members and others. The Concert Series runs fall through spring. The Coffee Houses are held out of doors in the summer months - our own mini-Hollywood Bowl. All concert events are free.
